THE VERDICT
Free, bottomless and merciless. Great, for the right player.
The deepest competitive strategy game on Steam, and free. Every hero is playable from day one; what you pay is time, patience and the occasional teammate.

The world
There is a mythology here, told through hero voice lines, comics and seasonal events, but the world is a backdrop. The setting is two Ancients and a river; the story is each match.
Dota 2 key art
The fight
Two teams of five on a single map, more than a hundred and twenty heroes, and items that can turn any of them into something new. Mechanics like denying, turn rates and high ground give the game a depth that takes years to learn.
The build
Item builds, talent trees and drafting create effectively endless variety. No hero is locked behind a payment; cosmetics are the only thing for sale.
The trial
The steepest learning curve in this codex. Expect dozens of matches before you feel competent and hundreds before you feel good. Bot matches and the new player experience help.
The port
Runs well on almost any PC with native Windows, macOS and Linux clients. Rated Playable on Steam Deck, though it is a keyboard-and-mouse game at heart.
Worthy
- Unmatched strategic depth
- Every hero free to play
- Constant balance updates keep it fresh
- Huge esports scene to learn from
Unworthy
- Brutal learning curve
- Matchmaking toxicity is real
- Asks for a serious time commitment
Who should enter
Competitive strategy players with friends to queue with. If you want a story or a single-player campaign, look elsewhere in the codex.
