Elden Ring
An open world that dares you to get lost, then kills you for it.

THE VERDICT
The open-world game that made exploration dangerous again. Essential.
FromSoftware took the structure of its Souls games and opened the gates. The Lands Between are vast, strange and full of things you were not told about, and the freedom to walk away from a boss you cannot beat changes everything.

The world
The Elden Ring has shattered, the demigods who hold its shards have gone to war and rot, and you are a Tarnished called back to claim the throne. As always with FromSoftware, the story is told in fragments: item descriptions, ruined architecture and NPCs who speak in riddles. The world-building, with contributions from George R. R. Martin, is the most layered the studio has produced.
Elden Ring key art
The fight
Deliberate, stamina-based combat with a wider toolbox than earlier Souls games: jumping attacks, guard counters, Ashes of War that change weapon skills, and spirit summons that can turn a fight. Bosses are spectacular and often brutal, especially in the late game.
The build
Hundreds of weapons, sorceries and incantations across strength, dexterity, faith, intelligence and arcane builds, each viable to the end. Respeccing becomes available once you reach a certain NPC, which encourages trying something new.
The trial
Hard, but the open world is a difficulty slider in disguise: if a boss walls you, explore elsewhere, level up and come back. Summons and co-op make almost everything beatable with patience.
The port
Locked at 60 fps on PC, with traversal stutter that patches have reduced but not removed. Valve rates it Verified on Steam Deck, where it runs at a steady 30 with sensible settings.
Worthy
- A world that rewards curiosity at every turn
- Boss design that is the best in the genre
- Build variety that survives to the final fight
- Online co-op and invasions that keep it alive
Unworthy
- Frame-rate cap and lingering traversal stutter
- Some late-game bosses feel tuned to punish
- Reused dungeon layouts in the catacombs
Who should enter
Anyone curious about Souls games; this is the most forgiving way in, oddly. Players who need a clear quest log should be ready to feel lost.

Second only by a whisker; the best combat and boss design in the codex.
Kindred worlds
Chosen for how they feel to play, not just the genre tag.
