The Index, autumn 2026: what moved and why

Baldur's Gate 3 keeps the top spot by a single point. Diablo IV slips into tier C.

Baldur's Gate 3 key art

Every quarter we re-read the whole codex and ask one question of each entry: would we still place it here today? This time, two things changed.

Baldur's Gate 3 holds first place

Elden Ring has the better combat and the better bosses, and on another day it could top the Index. Baldur's Gate 3 holds on because no other game here reacts to the player as completely, and because its builds and world scores are the highest in the codex. The gap is a single point.

Diablo IV moves to tier C

The campaign is still superb, but our score weighs builds and long-term value, and the seasonal endgame narrows quickly. With an always-online requirement and a paid battle pass in a full-price game, we think Grim Dawn and Path of Exile 2 are better homes for most action RPG players. Diablo IV is still worth playing for the story; it is no longer where we would send people first.
